Project overview

When I first started college back in 2019 it wasn't easy to think of what to make as a final project but one thing was always crystal clear: it would be about theater. My ever-growing involvement in the scene as an volunteer communicator was no drive-by, the issue was understanding a clear problem to solve with design — and boy, there were many.

Over the years, getting in touch with productions, big and small, helping boost indie shows and broadcasting artists during the pandemic, I came to realize one of the biggest issues was information. With each production being its own island, usually providing cast and crew info and changes through social media pages or printed programmes, which get discarded most of the time. Theater is intrinsically ephemeral and ever-changing at the same time. In a market striving for recognition outside niches, even with record box offices, and with no formal way of categorization or archival, I realized that was a solid start as a user need.

During the following year, I developed a theater database and performance logger, focused on listing detailed cast, crew and creative credits and relevant changes throughout runs. My project is the thematic merge of everything I came around to do during the four years of school: musical theater, community, UX design. Studying the intricacies of fandom culture and how it affects the Brazilian musical theater market, I conducted interviews with Fans, Communicators and Artists and used UX relevant tools and articles to base my decisions for information architecture and interface.
